The Land O' Lakes District (LOL) sponsored a Youth In Harmony (YIH) Festival on October 27, 2012, in Rochester, Minnesota, in conjunction with the LOL Fall Convention. Young men from around the District were drawn to this Festival for a full day of coaching and performing that culminated in an on stage presentation to a full house at the Mayo Civic Center.

The primary organizers of this event were Jon Buss, LOL Director YIH, Warren Wilson, LOL YIH Committee Member, and Del Ryberg, LOL 2012 Fall Convention Chairman. Many others around the District were instrumental in getting the young men signed up and providing transportation.

Sam Sather from the Hilltop Chapter was the Director of the Youth Chorus. The GQ Quartet, our 2011 LOL District Quartet Champion, consisting of Keith Olson (Tenor), Heath Walker (Lead), Steve McDonald (Bass), and Brent Graham (Baritone) shared their expertise as coaches.

It's also interesting to see that not all of the young chorus members were just now introduced to our barbershop style of music. Even though they are very young a few of them are already members of the Barbershop Harmony Society and have achieved honors. A prime example of this is Derek Glenna who is the baritone of our 2012 District Quartet Champion Grand Design. Others in this category were Jay Fahl & Bryan Ziegler from our 2009 LOL District Quartet Champion Expedition, Eric Renz, Dylan Ahmann, James Souhan & Tyler Sautter from Lamp Quartet, and Jacob Fedje from Bottom Line Quartet. Another member of the chorus, Kyle Hammers, is actually a high school choral director and is promoting barbershop in his high school chorus.

Another good example of an early introduction to the barbershop style of music is the Somerset High School quartet "JT And The Boyz" who sang one of their songs in between the chorus songs. The video shows this quartet being taught a tag by their High School Choral Director Scott Perau who is also the Director of the Greater St. Paul Area Chorus.

It was a thrill to join in with the standing ovation given to the Youth In Harmony Chorus when they finished their wonderful performance!

Many thanks to all of the young men who participated that day, and to all of the people that helped make it such a wonderful experience.
